New SX1238 is optimal for range and battery lifetime for Smart
Metering and Industrial applications

Semtech Corporation (Nasdaq: SMTC), a leading supplier of analog and
mixed-signal semiconductors, today introduced the SX1238
to its long range transceiver
platform. The SX1238 is the first device available to fully integrate
transceiver and front-end module into a single package creating an ideal
solution for smart metering applications such as water, gas and electric
meters targeting WMBus, 802.15.4g, WiSUN, and Zigbee NAN. The SX1238 is
an ideal complement to Semtech’s long range LoRa™
technology which has positioned Semtech as leader for
machine-to-machine (M2M) and internet of things (IoT) solutions and
infrastructure.
The highest output power available in most integrated transceivers is
+20dBm or 100mW. In most smart metering solutions, manufacturers will
include a separate front-end module (FEM) to boost the output power and
increase the range and performance of the solution. The SX1238 is the
first device to fully integrate the FEM and transceiver into a single
package optimizing size and performance. Output power of +27dBm is
typically viewed as the optimal tradeoff between range and battery
lifetime. Most applications targeting long range and battery operation
such as water and gas meters utilize +27dBm transmit or output power.
The SX1238 supports GFSK, FSK, GMSK and OOK modulation and is designed
to support WMBus, IEEE 802.15.4g (SUN), WiSUN, Zigbee NAN, FCC 15.247,
EN 300-220 as well as other worldwide RF standards and regulations.
